Rider magazine scoops 'Redesign' top spot at IoIC awards.
Following up on last year’s Award of Excellence for the Country Landowner’s association magazine, Land and Business, Quercus Eight has picked up a horsy magazine double in this year’s Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC) Awards.
Both of its flagship horse publications for the British Horse Society and British Riding Clubs (Rider and British Horse) picked up an Award of Excellence in the hotly contested Redesigned Publication class. And, better yet, Rider magazine went to win the ultimate spoils as Class Winner, beating stiff competition from seven top class publications from a large class of industry big hitters.
Both publications went through a redesign to retain the contract with British Horse last year, and designer of both, Quercus Eight’s Amelia Clark is suitably delighted with the response from the industry’s Internal Comms ‘Oscars’. “It is such an honour to gain the appreciation of one’s peers in such a hotly contested class. The Awards of Excellence are an accolade in themselves, but to win a class is the ultimate stamp of approval on a design. We are justifiably proud.
“I have worked very hard to bring both of these membership magazines up to a standard which we feel will vye with their bigger-budgeted newsstand cousins. And Quercus Eight’s clients are delighted to have won this award which shows our efforts have reaped dividends.”
Both magazines scored 18 plus in judging criteria marked out of 20. Judges were clearly impressed with the high quality approach, describing British Horse as “a top class magazine from start to finish. A much more professional and contemporary design makes it difficult to dislodge as number one magazine in its field” (a title gained while under Quercus Eight’s steerage over the last four years). They went on to describe class winner, Rider (newly won as part of the new contract retained with British Horse) as a “first class product” whose “bold and confident redesign makes an immediate statement” – “a more polished and professional product with news stand quality”.
Both magazines have gone from strength to strength with the Quercus Eight team at the helm, covering design, print and distribution to back up fantastic editorial teams at both the BHS and BRC.
Editor of class winner, Rider magazine says: “We are overwhelmed to receive such an award. This really is the icing on the cake for all of us and especially so for Amelia, who has brought a fresh and modern look to our magazine. It’s great to receive recognition within the industry and we will strive to keep improving and providing an inviting magazine for our readership.”
Jennifer Allen, of Quercus Eight adds: “We look forward to building on this year’s successes, and working together with the top editorial teams at both magazines during the next few years to keep putting out top class publications for them both.”
