Target Audience

Land & Business is the monthly magazine of the Country Land Business Association (CLA), the premier organisation safeguarding the interests of those responsible for land, property and business throughout rural England and Wales.

The CLA speaks for everyone who believes in a living and working in the countryside and its magazine is a vital tool in communicating with members and the wider public as well as being a key member benefit.

Creative Challenge

In 2008 we were briefed to bring the magazine up-to-date and create a more sophisticated and cohesive look and feel for the publication, without alienating long-established readers.

Given that the subject matter is the great English and Welsh countryside, the magazine is always a visual treat but the introduction of a more developed colour palette, a combination of fonts, more imaginative use of those brilliant images of the countryside, better signposting and more creative set pieces greatly increased the impact of the magazine on readers and advertisers.

Customer Engagement

A survey by Wordshop carried out on behalf of CLA in 2009 found a high level of customer satisfaction, with 80 per cent of members saying they read the magazine “avidly”.

The clearer format has helped CLA to get its important lobbying and campaigning messages across, promote major events like the CLA Game Fair, plus all the benefits of membership, to support and promote membership retention.

Business Result

The radical overhaul of content and design has resulted in a more readable publication, reflecting the values of CLA and its gravitas as a major voice on rural affairs.

It has also helped to attract more advertisers, enabling cost savings to CLA of more than £35,000 despite the tough economic conditions.

Land & Business has won an Award in Excellence for Design from the Institute of Internal Communications.
